Frequently Asked Questions

Should I book the tour in advance?

Yes! Rainbow Mountain Travels excellent reputation has meant that we are by far the biggest operator on the Mountain, but we do try to keep groups small, so to ensure your seat on the day you want to travel, it is recommended to book in advance.

I have not yet booked my accommodation…what pick up location should I select when booking my tour.

For now, select Pariwana Hostel, and then when you finally know where you are staying, email us 24hrs before your tour starts and we can get it updated on our system.

I cannot find my accommodation listed in the operator pick up locations when making my booking. What should I do?

Rainbow Mountain Travels pick you up from the hotel and hostel accommodation listed at the time of booking. This covers over 90% of the accommodation providers in the area. If you are staying somewhere that is not listed, or an Airbnb for example, look on google maps and try to see a hotel/hostel close to you and then see if that’s on our list. If you are still not sure, then drop us an email and we can recommend what pickup location you choose.

Can I rent a horse during this trek?

Yes, you can rent a horse for 90 soles approx for approximately 3 hours, but there are some parts that you will need to walk (approx. 20 to 40 minutes). If you want to hire a horse, you will need to inform the guide at the beginning of the tour and it is subject to availability. It is not possible to reserve a horse in advance, it must be done the day of the tour.

Will I have problems with altitude sickness on this tour?

The main question is whether you will have altitude sickness in Cusco or not. Not everyone gets sick in high altitudes, and it is difficult to predict who is likely to be badly affected by it. For most people, it is nothing more than a headache and a dizzy sensation that diminishes over a short period of time, 1 to 2 days for most people after arriving to Cusco.

If you want to limit your chances of getting sick, there are a few things you can do. Firstly, do not fly directly into high altitude – proceed slowly, allowing your body time to acclimatise as you ascend gradually. However, for many that is not possible, so it’s important to drink lots of water, and to slow down! This sounds simple, but both of these things are very important. Your body is struggling because you don’t have enough oxygen, so avoiding any strenuous activity is a good idea. Chew some coca leaves – the native people of South America have been chewing coca for centuries, thanks to its ability to alleviate mild altitude sickness symptoms. Coca leaves can be bought in any supermarket, and even souvenir shops or street stalls. Take altitude sickness pills (Soroche): these are sold over the counter all over Peru and Bolivia, and are just a few dollars.
